2012 Fight for Preemies Dodgeball Tournament

Attention all NJ FBLA members and advisers!

Are you interested in enjoying showing your spirit for your school and NJ FBLA? Do you want to find a way to support the March of Dimes in a fun, exciting way? Would you like to enjoy a fun-filled evening with plenty of food, drinks, prizes, and music? If you answered yes to any of the previous questions, then you most definitely want to participate in the 2nd Annual “Fight for Preemies” Dodgeball Tournament!

This tournament is between local FBLA chapters in our state with all proceeds going toward the March of Dimes. Local chapters may enter up to one team of ten players. Of course, chapters are highly encouraged to bring other fans and supporters to cheer them on. The only prerequisite for a player to play is a minimum donation to the March of Dimes. All rules and details are listed in the registration form that advisers should receive in an email sent out by the State Office. The registration can also be found in the link below. Due to time constraints, only a limited number of teams may register to play, so slots are being filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please get your forms in ASAP and reserve your spot today!

REGISTRATION FORMS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED ASAP

The date, time, and location of the event are as follows:

Friday, April 27, 2012

6:30 – 10:30 p.m.

South Brunswick High School

750 Ridge Road

Monmouth Junction, NJ 08852

Chapters are responsible for their own transportation, although it is suggested that attending members carpool together to attend the event. Advisers are highly encouraged to attend; however, if an adviser is unable to attend, each chapter must have at least one adult chaperone to accompany those members.

After enjoying the thrilling success of last year’s tournament, I absolutely cannot wait to see what this year’s tournament has in store. I hope that you will all be joining us to prove that your chapter is worthy of being crowned the title of 2012 “Fight for Preemies” Champion!

As always, please post your questions, comments, or concerns below, and please don’t hesitate to email me at northcentral@njfbla.org!

FBLA-PBL Week Ideas

The following is a message from the National Officer Team. Please utilize these great ideas to make FBLA-PBL Week a success in your local chapter!

This week is FBLA-PBL Week! During this week, chapters are encouraged to use this time to publicize their activities and successes, boost their membership, and gear up for their spring activities. FBLA-PBL Week also coincides with the National Career and Technical Education Month, so this is a good time to promote the mission and creed of FBLA. Many chapters plan special activities for this week like Dress to Win Day, FBLA T-shirt Day, Dodgeball Tournaments, Faculty Appreciation day, and the list goes on. Here are some suggestions to how you can celebrate FBLA-PBL Week.

Monday—Kick Off Day: Make an announcement in your classes about FBLA-PBL Week and the importance of joining student organizations. Talk to teachers/professors and gain their support! Make posters to put on the lockers of each of your members.

Tuesday—Each one Reach One Day: It’s not too late to recruit new members. Challenge your officers and current members to each recruit one new member. For every member that they recruit, put their name in for a drawing for a prize.

Wednesday—Adviser Appreciation Day and Dress to Win Day: Honor your adviser and other teachers, professors, and administrators by bringing coffee and doughnuts for them. Take your dean, department chair, or principal out to lunch. Have all members celebrate “Dress to Win” day where they dress professionally and pose for a group photo.

Thursday—Professional Engagement Day: Join your fellow FBLA-PBL members nationwide in planning a project to interact with professional members and local business leaders i.e. through a networking session, guest speakers, a career fair, etc.

Friday—Wrap-up Day: Plan a social for your chapter members—meet for a group dinner, host a bowling tournament, or sip some lattes at a coffee shop.

Saturday—Community Service Day: Plan an amazing service project for your chapter. Partner with a local volunteer center or another FBLA-PBL chapter and make your community a better place.

We hope you all enjoy FBLA-PBL week and have an amazing time celebrating with your local chapter!

NJFBLA Recruitment Brochure

Head Up Recruitment!

Need help recruiting members for your chapter? The State Membership Committee and I, your Membership Vice President, are excited to announce the launch of our new NJFBLA Recruitment Brochure! The brochure highlights the primary benefits of becoming a future business leader, covering all topics from competitive events to feedback from alumni, state officers, and members.

Last year, we saw a drop in our membership which is why the committee and I made it a priority for you, the current members to get a head start in recruitment. We wanted you to use the best resource to capture FBLA in the best frame. After all, how can you sum up a year of being a member in two minutes? Within the first five seconds people are making up their minds about FBLA and you only have the next minute to convince someone that FBLA is right for them.

So now you’re thinking it’s the middle of the year, school’s almost over, and the relaxation of summer is all that’s cluttering your mind. And if so, you can certainly skip these next few paragraphs and read them again in September. But if you strive to get an early start…

  1. Take advantage of FBLA-PBL Week! Some schools have an “FBLA Awareness Day” during the week of Feb 6th-10th to convince underclassmen to join FBLA next year. Host an informational meeting in disguise by having a meeting with free ice cream open to everyone in the school! Make the mtg 30 min max.
  2. At the recruitment meeting, briefly capture what I call the three C’s of recruitment: Competitive Events, Conferences, and Community Service. Those are FBLA’s three primary events. Flourish their interest with pictures, personal input, but cut down on the info!
  3. Talk to people individually. You don’t always have to recruit ten members at once. As you get to know more people, hone into your marketing intuition and scan potential FBLA members.

Use the brochure to recruit, to inform, or to simply remind yourself what FBLA is all about! Our committee wants this to be used for multiple occasions—not just recruitment! Use it to attract local business about FBLA, to showcase what FBLA does to your local newspaper, and so much more!

As always, we would also love to hear feedback from you! Send us how you used the brochure and your opinions about our new resource at membershipcomm@gmail.com. Happy Recruiting!

*This brochure was created by a sub-committee of our state membership committee which consisted of Avishek Rao (committee chair), Emily Tu, Irene Patron, and Frankie Yip. Much applause to them! The other two sub-committees are currently working on developing two more recruitment projects…tune in later for more!

SLC National Anthem Singer

This year, the NJ FBLA has given all members of the state chapter an opportunity to enter audition tapes in the hopes of singing the National Anthem at the 2012 State Leadership Conference.  The selection process was extremely difficult.  Each and every student entry was exceptional and further supported the fact that our state chapter is full of profound talent.  During the voting process, the state executive board was blind to the name of each student, allowing the winner to be chosen  fairly and without bias.

We are pleased to announce that a winner has been selected.  Congratulations to Maggie Bera from Sayreville War Memorial High School for being selected to sing the National Anthem at this year’s SLC!  We all look forward to hearing her sing the Star Spangled Banner at our State Leadership Conference. Thank you to all who submitted audition tapes.  We greatly appreciate your sharing your talent with us and choosing to get further involved in our state organization.

Congratulations Regional Competitive Event Winners!

The state officer team would like to congratulate all members who successfully competed in the regional competitive events.  A list of members who placed in their respective competitive events for each region is available for download below:

Regional Competitive Events Tips and Tricks

Hello New Jersey FBLA Regional Competitors!

All of this cold weather and study time must mean one thing, the 2012 NJ Regional Competitive Events is coming soon! The online tests will be open from Monday, January 9 until Friday, January 13. Below are some tips and tricks for all members and advisers to have the best possible Regional Competitive Event experience ever!

  • Turn the Regional Competitive Events into a “Dress for Success” day. Ask teachers if they will offer extra credit points to students who wear business attire for the FBLA Regional Competitive Events all day. With business attire on, students can explain why they are dressed to other students and what FBLA really is. This is a great membership recruitment method!
  • Prior to the Regional Competitive Events, distribute the official FBLA-PBL Dress Code to members. Ensure that all members are aware of details such as date, time, and location. ALL STUDENTS MUST BE IN BUSINESS ATIRE.
  • Before you begin your test session, check out the 2011-2012 NJ FBLA Awards Manual for any last minute concerns. The New Jersey FBLA State Awards Program manual has been updated and is available on the www.njfbla.org website.
  • Immediately after your testing is completed, host a pizza party for your members! If you are administrating your testing in the morning, look into having breakfast.
  • Following the mailing of all awards, investigate the possibility of hosting an award ceremony. Have local members bring in food while chapter officers hand out all trophies and certificates. Contact the state office if you are interested in having a representative there!
  • Improve your local chapter’s public relations! Be sure to take lots of pictures on the date of the Regional Competitive Events. Submit a press release to a local newspaper, recognize the events your school’s website, or even submit an article to the National FBLA Publication, Tomorrow’s Future Business Leader. Contact NJ FBLA Historian Kaitlin Chuang at historian@njfbla.org if you need additional tips on Public Relations.

Good luck to everybody at the 2012 Regional Competitive Events! Most importantly, have fun and see you at the 2012 State Leadership Conference.

Congratulations November Members of the Month!

Dimitrios Kochka-Thomas – Wallkill Valley Regional High School

Dimitrios is currently a sophomore; and he has participated in all of the chapter’s activities since becoming a member at the end of this eighth grade year. He has been a wonderful member of the Wallkill Valley FBLA parking crew at the New Jersey State Fair; he also parked at the Crawfish Festival and Peter’s Valley Craft Fair. At Wallkill Valley FBLA’s Super Night, Dimitrios was there to help in every aspect. Members recognize Dimitrios as the hardest working member of our chapter. His commitment to community service projects and his sincere concern for the welfare of others is unbelievable for such a young man.

Jack Frey – Union County Vocational Technical School

Jack is a junior at our school and has been a key team member since the 2011-2012 year began. As our chapter’s need for a chapter website was becoming more apparent, he created our chapter website at the beginning of the school year and has continued to fine tune it for our chapter’s needs. This year when we went through the process of signing up for the Regional Competitions Jack created an easy to use online sign up form for members. Jack takes the initiative and has recently been appointed to an officer position as our chapter’s Webmaster. Jack has proven himself to be a valued member of the team.

Javan Jones – Cumberland Regional High School

Jones is surely a Future Business Leader of America. He is always energetic and eager to participate in all FBLA activities. He kept his group at the NFLC alive by lifting them with his energetic spirit. His bright smile and motivating attitude brought joy, laughter, and energy to all those around him. He not only was inspiring but was fervent to meet new people at the workshops. Javan used his business cards, which he made after school, so that he could easily pass along his contact information with students that he had built friendships with during the Conference.

Kelli Kyle – Egg Harbor Twp. High School

As of this year, being the Social Events Coordinator, she successfully organized and orchestrated the activities of our Induction Dinner in November. She prepared the evening’s script and led the Officer Induction Ceremony with remarkable grace. The night went on with no major problems and all of the club members and special guests responded with positive remarks. As the year continues, she plans to organize more events that will allow members to create lasting memories in the club. Kelli has shown outstanding performance in club activities and also Competitive Events when she qualified for the 2011 National Leadership Conference after placing first in FBLA Principles & Procedures at the NJ State Leadership Conference, proudly representing our school.

Olivia Schreiber – Pequannock Township High School FBLA

For this month, Olivia Schreiber is our member of the month. She helped us organize a Fall Clean Up day, where our whole chapter volunteered to rake leaves, clear lawns, and brighten the day of several community members who were greatly affected by the recent harsh weather. By doing this, the people in our community were able to recognize our high school as well as our school’s FBLA chapter. Olivia joined the PTHS FBLA executive board this year as a sophomore, and is our Community Service director. Since this year has started, there has never been a time where she has disappointed us. She is that member that will always go above and beyond to help make our chapter better and better as weeks go on.

Lori Shapiro – Livingston High School

Lori is currently a junior and is a well-qualified business student by having taken Introduction to Business, Business Law 1&2, and AP Economics. She has taken an active role in her chapter’s member involvement initiative with committees to help get organized. Helping the Newsletter Committee, Lori put in timeless efforts to make sure everything runs smoothly. One thing she wants FBLA to improve on is trying to make the FBLA name not only associated with competitive events but also the community outreach associated with FBLA. Congratulations Lori!

Daniel Soto – Cumberland Regional High School

Dan, a senior at CRHS, was quick to recognize and begin taking advantage of the many opportunities FBLA offers in order to gain more knowledge and skills in areas that will help him succeed. He believes FBLA will give him the qualities and information he needs to operate his own business as well as the chance to improve his social skills. The 2011 NFLC in Philadelphia was Dan’s first FBLA conference. At the NFLC, Dan took each and every opportunity to network with other members, improve his leadership skills, and advance his business education. Back in his hometown, Dan makes it a priority to give back to the community by participating in service projects, including cooking for a soup kitchen during various holiday seasons.

Garrett Stewart – Manville High School

Garrett is a senior this year, and has remained an outstanding member of this organization for over three years. Garrett has contributed to our organization by being a pro-active member as well as an associate who realizes the value of community involvement. Garrett was able to involve the community of Manville in the “Pick A Pumpkin” Service Project for “March of Dimes”. Due to Garrett’s organizational skills, he has been able to raise money and project the importance of March of Dimes for our organization. He was steadfast in his abilities to explain the benefits of this project, and forged many lifelong alliances and partnerships with many businesses within our community. He was able to achieve an understanding of the March of Dimes and its goals and our mission here at Manville High School.
